The 10 Rules of Cavy Companionship
Cavies are dependant on us humans to provide the love and care they need in order to reach their full life expectancy. Listed are 10 basic rules your cavy insists you abide by:
1. Keep cavies in crowds of 2 or more: Cavies must have a companion of their own kind to share their ups and downs with. After all, it would be like shutting us humans away from any form of human contact. It would send us insane (well, a large majority of us at least)!
2. Provide ample accomodation: Ideally, a deluxe 5-star mansion with cable TV and trained staff to attend to every whim. See "Cavy Cages" (www.cavycages.com) for details of every cavy's dream come true.
3. Feeding frenzied friends: Know how to satisfy your crazy cavies who are desperate for their dinner!
4. Bedding bonanza: Aspen, Carefresh, fleece? Let your cavy guide you to the solution!
5. Essential exercise: Floor time is essential to a cavy's overall health. Plus, it gives them the chance to practice popcorning and express their emotions!
6. Limit lap time: Many cavies wish for us humans to abide by this rule, as few piggies enjoy being handled for long periods of time!
7. Bathe only when necessary: If cavies could talk, they would certainly put up a big fight when this event occurred!!
8. Never house rabbits and pigges together: Rabbits and cavies do not make good companions. Not only do rabbits have different nutritional needs from guineas, but a single excited kick from a bunny can seriously injure and even kill a cavy.
9. Don't buy cavies from pet stores: By purchasing an animal from pet shops, you are giving them the money to pay breeders to endanger the lives of the very species of animal you are buying.
10. Never breed cavies: Breeding these creatures, whether to sell or to keep the babies, seriously risks the life of the female. So many sows experience complications during labour which either kills or disables her. Labour complications are one of the biggest causes of cavy deaths, so don't let it happen to yours!
