It seems that most pet shops haven't a clue about sexing their pigs for sale, so ... if you go buy a female (sow) Guinea Pig from a pet shop, I strongly advise you to:- 1. Check the sex of the one you are going to buy. If it is definately a sow then 2. Check the sex of the rest of the pigs that are in with her. IF ANY OF THOSE PIGS IN WITH HER ARE MALES (BOARS), IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THE SOW WILL BE PREGNANT, WITH ALL THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS AND EXPENSE THAT MAY INCUR. ... if you go to buy a male (boar), again you must check the sex (don't go by what the assistant tells you, THEY PROBABLY DON'T KNOW!). Your "boar" could turn out to be a sow, with the problems detailed above. If the assistant knows his/her stuff, he/she will be able to press in the right place for the penis to pop out. If there is not an obvious penis, then it's probably not a male. I repeat, don't assume that because you are told it is a boar or a sow, that it actually is! You need to do the check yourself.
