It just doesn't sit right with me at all & what about the problems it causes? I know my Dylan is a dog but we're sure his epilepsy is because of inbreeding-it's not fair on the animal or the owner. The piggies i got from Wakefield; i'm sure Ruben or Rye was the father to that litter, their sister, the mother. No I'm totally against it in all forms of animal breeding. Oh & no, no way would i marry my brother - eeeew perish the thought! In humans we call it incestuous, does it not mean the same in the animal world?? I think it does & i'll get off my soap-box now Niki x

First kim i have to say of your friend, WHY? Why do it to "see what happens?" I can't understand the mentality or logic? Did the outcome match her expectations? How sad that babies were born & suffered unnecessarily. Great links Kim, Having read them they do make you think esp. the bits about the Royals & the Rotheschilds, which in a twisted way i can understand - "keep it in the family" therefore, theoretically keeping a "pure" blood-line but look at the problems the monarchy's had over the years with madness for one! This just re-confirms for me that in-breeding is so wrong & if nature overcomes this then why the hell we humans, who are supposed to be the more intelligent race, do this is totally beyond me!!! I'm definitely off my soap-box now Niki x

i am totally against it i breed my piggies and have extensive pedigree tree for my guys so i no exactly who is related to who. you are totally right we would never dream of marrying any close family its totally wrong i won't even breed any of my guys even if they have the same great great great grandad as each other never mind brother or dad to sister or anything else. your right it causes health problems it shouldn't be done in any animal i no a lot of dogs are inbreed to enhance certain asset's to the breed but is this really worth it when health problems are given to the breed ? i don't think so. right finished having a rant lol i hope i haven't confused u all i can go off on one lol vicky x

Yeah I agree, I just dont do it, it makes them weak and have problems. The only really bonny line of satins I know ( and I dont know for sure they dont have OD but I do have one that is 7 years old and she is bonny and healthy and not suffering in anyway) is a BIG outcross fan, he says outcross outcross outcross, yes it takes you longer to get where you want to show wise, but surely health is more important

This was something she did before i became friends with her and she told me about it and i couldn't help but tell her how i felt about that. Silly girl.... Glad you like the links. The Wikiepdia site is very good it well find anything you need to know really. [/quote] I'm glad she hasn't done it since You're right about the wikiepedia site - excellent

I am totally against inbreeding. I think that Tish's problems are down to inbreeding as in every other respect she would have been a great show pig.

Sorry to hear Tish has problems Josie, what has been the trouble?
Its difficult if a breeder that you get your stock from does not tell you the whole truth, and although I cant imagine that would happen do you think has occasionally?

So many people go against inbreeding, but you must know, if it's used right, it's a great tool to improving cavy herds! Most breeders I know of inbred.... not past son to mom, or daughter to father though. Sister to Brother inbreeding is way too close. Inbreeding has its pros and cons. It can help improve type, color, etc. It can also cause problems if you inbreed to closely for too long. Or if the cavies being inbred have health problems running in their lines, or DQs or bad faults that can be passed on.
I'd be in disbelief to hear others that breed cavies that never inbreed them in any sort of way. Unless you have a lot of different pigs from a lot of different breeders, most likely you are going to have to inbreed them. That's why you want to find the best of the best for your breeding and showing program. Your boars must be superior. I find it hard for breeders to be against something like inbreeding, because if you know what you're doing, it really helps your herd.
I had two American Satin Himalayans bred together that weren't related, and 3 stillborns were born and 1 live one. I also had a uncle bred to his niece and they had healthy pups. The dad was related to her dad only by dad. And I just had a first time mom have a litter, bred to her dad, it was her first litter, so obviously it is pretty common that two were stillborns. She has 1 nice healthy real nice looking Silver Solid boar though.
But would I breed sister to brother? No, that's way too close to inbreed, since they both have the same genes. With inbreeding, you still need to bring in fresh blood once in awhile. I mean, new lines. Had to say that, didn't want others thinking that the pigs actually need new blood! LOL

I'm also against inbreeding... although I have no experience in breeding piggys I have over the last 20 years been breeding Persian cats and know that inbreeding causes vast problems Even Cats that show no Genetic disorder can be a carrier and thus effecting the litter and later on down the line who's to say that a perfect looking kitten wont pass down something to the next generation.... I've never inbred my Cats and if i do decide that i want to breed my piggys then i will continue with the same policy

I'm against inbreeding. I think its because of inbreeding Squeak has a few problems - I got Amber from a pet shop and she was pregnant so no doubt she was inbred

Thats the trouble, if you get most of your guineas from an unscrupulous breeder with loads of guineas, and they tell you a guinea has a certain line, unless they keep very detailed records how can they remember? I think it's possible they make it up......
What problems did Squeak have Emmsy?

Hello, Here is an accurate definition of inbreeding, base on the way one should compute it, I think it can help understanding: Inbreeding

I had weak hamsters before, when I took care of them really well, so I believed the reason for them being too weak was inbreeding.
I'm totally against it like all of you guys, because when me and other people who lost the pets we loved so much because of inbreeding, it was so painful each time.
Those "breeders" who do that really have no heart. They couldn't feel how hard it is for pet owners to lose their pets.

i have to disagree.
there is a difference in inbreeding and linebreeding. you have to know your animals before doing close breedings. linebreeding is breeding siblings to get the good genes to stay in your lines. inbreeding is when you get too close or too much linebreeding and then that is when you get problems. when you breed related animals you are making the same traits pop up again and again. this also means that *bad* traits come out too. these you *do not* breed and you stop linebreeding because its now becoming inbreeding. though you could just as well have two totally unrelated animals and end up with sickly babies because they just had alot of *bad* traits.
every breed of every animal came about by linebreeding. for example, all of the fainting goats in the world today came from one group of goats. one buck (male) and 5 does (females) that all had the gene for fainting. fainting is cause by a genetic disorder where when the animal gets alarmed by a noise, etc then the muscles lock up and the animal "faints". there are many degrees to it and any animal (yes humans too) can get it. it is called myotonia, the genetic condition.
and by the way, i am a farm girl and have a herd of goats and rabbits. i have had to put down a not even week old baby rabbit. i have had to put down a goat that i had bottle raised. if nothing else i know how it feels to be in that situation.
i would be more then happy to talk more on the subject (: and i have done linebreeding with my rabbits. i would be more then happy to post pics of them and you can see by them, and their own litters, that if done correctly it is perfectly fine.
and sorry for drudging up an older thread lol

Its a good topic ohiogoatgirl, and one which is you dont understand 100% can be confusing (much like genetics) BUT i have to agree, there is a slight difference in "inbreeding" and "linebreeding" As you have said, it is done and needed to imrpove certain things. Dog breeders, cat breeders, rabbit and guinea pig breeders do it. IF done correctly it can and goes greatly improve the breed.
Mother to son and father to daughter is the cloest i would personally go, I have no reason to breed siblings.
So as far as inbreeding goes(siblings), yes i agree im not for it! But linebreeding, done by people who know their stock, know why they are doing it, is fine.

i agree that i do not understand gpig genetics. though with the goats and rabbits i am confident in my ability and have done some line breeding. once i start breeding guinea pigs myself i hope to be able to have a variety of genetics to work with so that i will not have to linebreed. or at the very least not until i know alot more about their genetics.

I have no reason to line breed myself but if it came to it i wouldnt rule it out. But for now i have suitable sows and boars totally unrelated to breed with, as i breed for myself and quality over quantity i pick carefully who breeds with who and when.
