Call my a paranoid piggy mum but...this morning when I went into the caviary I looked into Beth's hut and what did I see only her no babies, so I then looked into Abbie's hut and there were ALL the babies all 8 of them in total. Now I am worrying that Beth isn't feeding hers Abbie is and if she has 8 to feed will they all get anough milk?
Should I seperate the mums and babies or am I just being paranoid and Beth will feed hers and maybe help Abbie too. Twice I have put her babies back with her to find them again with Abbie the next time I go in.
Any help would be appreciated.

That's a worry, Dawn....I wish I could suggest something, but I have never bred piggies....I will ask Eamonn when I see him today about Dale...Really hope all your babies get enough milk...Keep us posted

Hi Dawn, I had the same problem with Fern and Fawn, Fawn was feeding all 6 babies while Fern was doing nothing. Then she started to be really nasty towards poor Fawn who was doing a wonderful job. So I split them just to be on the safe side. I know they are capable of raising big litters but like I said wanted to be safe. Perhaps someone with more experience of large litters can help? 5 is my largest litter yet Sar x |

Did she feed them once she had been separated? The worry I have is if I take Beth & her babies and put them in another cage that she will ignore them and not feed them. I saw her kick out at one of them today when they tried to feed.
I was thinking maybe leave them together and supplement them with some bread and actimel or something like that.

hmm... that's weird. Because Beth seemed to be doing so well because she was helping Abbie with the birth. Maybe you could just sit and watch them for a while during cuddle time today. Just like watch them with another piggie on your lap to make sure Beth is doing some of the work.

I once had a few sows with new babies in a large pen together and they'd all had 3-5 babies. There was one sow that sort of kept all the babies and didn't let the others near and was being nasty towards the others. I didn't see the harm at the time cos I thought the babies would all go find a sow they could feed from when they needed it. But they must have all tried to feed from the same one, or the other sows just stayed away. I lost a few babies and the others were very thin, for piggies. That was a few years ago, when I started breeding and now I just make sure each sow is with her babies alone while they're young.
Not exactly like whats happening with yours but just my experience, if that helps at all.

Maybe she is more helping with Abny's babies rather than her own? To be honest I would keep them together as you don't nkow whats really go on.

I have brought them into the house to observe them more closely. I did think Beth would be a good mum as she did help Abbie deliver. However tonight they do seem to be sharing duties so I think panic is over thankfully Dawn |

Maybe she got confused about what she should be doing either that or she's thought "let someone else deal with them" LOL

I think all is well now, today she had 4 of the babies in her hut and Abbie had 4 in hers so they are sharing care thank goodness.

Awww great news Dawn. Yes once seperated Fern took her duties seriously and is a great mommy now! Unfortunately it was one of Ferns baby's that got pinched by the cat  So she's very protective over the two that are left! ;D |
