Poppy started with her babies about 8.30 last night. I don't usually go into the caviary after 8pm but last night for some reason I just had to go in and check on them.
She was straining so much for almost half an hour so I was very worried.
David (Grimcoll) rang & tried to talk me through what to do (Thanks so much David, I don't know what I would have done without you) and after a long hard hour I managed to help her deliver a huge cream boar 143g. He was stillborn and I couldn't revive him and then 20 mins later she had another boar finally emerged also huge this time a Crested PEW weighing 158g. He was also stillborn I guess they had been waiting to be born too long
However after this Poppy seemed quite bright considering and was eating some cabbage so at 11.10pm I decided to put her back in her cage for a rest and check on her first thing in the morning.
I spent a totally restless and sleepless night worrying and tossing and turning until at 7am I went out to check on them and feed them their veggies.
Poppy was sitting hunched up in the same place I have put her the night before so now I feared the worst.
I lifted up the hut to check on her and I noticed a long red sort of tube like thing sticking out of her.
I phoned the emergency vet and was told to go straight down to Ashton which I did as soon as I have dropped Aimee & Hannah off at Sarah's for her mum to take them to school.
As soon as I got there I was rushed into a room and the boss vet came straight in.
He was very good and explained they could try and put it back in but it was so far out not just a small way all the way so he said she would probably only have a very small chance of it working about 15% or even less and even then she could get infection as it had been trailing right out
So I decided to make a very hard decision to have her PTS to stop her suffering
I am going to miss my beautiful Poppy. She would greet me every morning and even pop onto my hand for a snuggle
Please tell me I did the right thing
