My tri sow Smudge has another bout of Cystitis this will be the 4 time,I've put her on Baytril, but so far no improvement,so I'm wondering if it could be something more serious i.e Tumour?. I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow, they are very good,I can usually get an appointment the same day,I can't stand to see her crying in pain and hunched up,I'm hoping I might get Septrem if the vet feels it would do some good, however,I think it might be the end of the road for poor Smudge,I don't want it to be,but I don't think she's responding to antibiotics.

I dont know if this could help but have you tried adding cranberry or aloe vera to her water regularly ? Some cavies, (and some people) are naturally more acidic in thier 'workings' and so repeatedly get cystitus, the aloe or cranberry helps neutralise that acidity and so helps it to stop happening
Just a thought

It could be bladder stones. My cream sow Beth had several bouts of cystitis that usually cleared up after a course of baytril but then it got more survere and there was blood in her pee so I took her to the vets and they said she needed an op to remove stones.
I hope your piggy will be ok please leet us know how you get on at the vets wont you?

For cysitis Septrin 1ml twice a day is the best thing, with bladder stones the pig usually lifts and grunts, but cystitis they lift and squeek, baytril is not the best thing for this, takes to long to do any good, I hope this helps.

I took Smudge to the vet this evening and she has given her a course of Septrin and some Metacam for the pain,I would add cranberry or aloe to the water, but her and her sister both do not drink,I check the water regularly and the level remains the same,so I'm not sure whether they would drink it or not, however, I will go and buy the cranberry juice and see,it's well worth giving it a go thanks a lot for your suggestions will keep you informed of how she progresses.

Lottie went through a few months last year when she had repeated cystitis. However when Charlie had it this year, I went to the best piggie vet at my local surgery (the other 3 aren't as good with pigs) and he took him straight through for an x-ray to check for stones. Charlie's cystitis is due to a very large kidney tumour, hence why he kept peeing blood. This is rare but I have heard of one other pig who had a bladder growth. Stones are far more common than internal tumours though, it seems.
If the UTI returns again, Sandra, request an x-ray. It will rule out stones, and that is important to check for in these cases. Hope Smudge is feeling much better soon.

I'm just waiting for the vet to phone about Smudge as I took her back today as she was no better, they are going to do an x-ray to see if she has a stone. if so then they will operate, either this evening or tomorrow.

Just had the vet phone me about Smudge, she had no bladder stones or Kidney stones, they tried to put a thermometer into her bottom, but could not,so they think she might have a tumour in her intestine that was pressing on her bladder, anyway I took the decision to have her pts,it was the kindest thing to do,she would not have got better.
