The guinea pig has two upper and two lower incisors for gnawing. These teeth only have enamel on their front surfaces and are therefore self-sharpening. The canines are absent but in their place is a gap known as the diastema. There are four upper and lower cheek teeth (one premolar and three molars) on both sides. Guinea pigs' teeth are open rooted and grown continuously (hypsodontic) and therefore they must be provided with a constant supply of hard food to ensure even wearing of the teeth.

Hmmm... I think it is a bit odd but if they aren't over grown or scooked they should be ok. Mind you I would get him to the vet to be checked just to be on the safe side and put your mind at rest.
Let us know how you go won't you Karen?

Hello everyone! I am new so Please correct me if I am doing this wrong. I have one piggy and her name is Lola (my name is Alice). She is about 5yrs old and she is multi colored. I will upload some pictures soon just do not have any on this computer. Lola is eating just fine and her front teeth are in good shape but my husband and I just noticed when we hand offer her a baby carrott she does not seem to be able to open her mouth wide enough to take it. When I give her other fruits and veggies i cut them up into small pieces so we only see the problem when we offer a carrott. As I stated before she is eating her dry food just fine. Any thoughts? Thanks so much and i am happy to have found this site.

Yes, she squeeks for them every morning. It almost seems like her jaw locks at a certain point. Have you ever heard of that happening to a cavie before?
