I am not sure what has happened but on Saturday I went into the caviary to feed the piggies and noticed that Beth's eye was rather red and swollen. On closer inspection Heather who was calling to pick us up to go to Hyde & Glossop show removed a piece of hay from it and then we put some eye drops into it. It does seem to be getting better with the eye drops and it doesn't seem to bother her too much however it does look like the eye is quite badly damaged. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so how long did it take fore the eye to heal and was there any lasting damage? Dawn

Yes Dawn. When I went to Kent to pick up my new Swiss from Germany the beautiful saffron/lilac boar had a sore looking eye and when we looked carefully he had a hayseed that had perced his eyeball right in the corner of his eye. I carefully pulled it out, but after a few hours his eye looked just like Beth's. I put brolene drops in three times a day and it cleared completely in a few days, but it did look very nasty. There's no sign of damage now at all. I have had it happen once before too. They don't appear to have any discomfort once the offending object has been removed. Good luck with Beth.

I have had a few with eye poke injuries like this, a rough bit of hay or a stray claw from a cage companion. It always looks really AWFUL and the first time I was convinced the sow would have to have her eye removed, but a week or so later and it was all better. My vet explained to me that the 'white covering' is in fact a healing mechanism that comes across in the case of eye damage to make the pig not move her eye around too much, so it can heal quicker, so the white is not part of the injury, its part of the cure . With the eye drops you have I should imagine that 2 weeks at the most will see her back to normal. Its one of those things that looks an awful lot worse than it actually is Poor Beth, she does look in the wars, I had a picture on Cavyland at one point of a sow with an eye poke injury but I am not sure if its still there

Hi Dawn - sorry to hear about Beth's eye ! Charlie got a nasty scratch on the cornea of his left eye a few mths ago, and his eye looked terrible !! Our vet said it was probably from a sharp piece of hay. We really thought he was going to lose his eye, but thankfully, with drops, it came right again. Hope Beth's eye healsa quickly, and without any major probs. Irene. xx

Well tonight when I was watching the piggies like I often do just standing there and looking at them going about their business Tia-Maria was licking Beth around her sore eye. I thought how cute she much know it's sore and she in her way is trying to sooth it or clean it for her, it brought a smile to my face Dawn

Hi,
I just wanted to see if someone could offer me some advise. I have a 3 year old guinea, called Harry. 3 days ago we noticed a slight inflammation in his eye but it didn't look like anything to be concerned about and yesterday I had a look and its just horrendous. I think its something stuck in his eye but its way too swollen to get a good look. We took him to the vets today and he said that its a lost cause basically and to either operate or just leave it to collapse in on its self, of which neither of those options are favourable. Can anyone offer a different option.
Many thanks in advance,
Laura

my ginea pig had an ulcer on her eye from a poke or something and it looked really bad and the vet said there is not much chance and she would need her eye removed they put her on 3 different eye drops and antibiantics and in 3 weeks it had healed but not completly its been 4 months now and its still healing by its self so maybe try eye drops it just takes time to heal

Hi thank you for coming back to me. Yes well I'm very reluctant to go down the route of the operation for the simple reason that we have previously lost a guinea to the anaesthesia. So I've got my fingers crossed but I don't want to get my hopes up too much. I took a picture of his eye today. I would appreciate if you could let me know whether it is similar to the problem your guinea had.
Thank you again
Laura

your ginea pigs eye looks very similar to the way mine looked. Did the vet give you drops The drops the vet gave me was pentamycetin for a week but it did not seem to help at all the eye still looked the same so then they gave me ciprofloxacin and a few days later it finally started looking better and also lots of eye lube hope this information help and your ginea pig eye gets better just keep trying the drops I am so glad I did not just went with the operation

Oh right well that is promising then. What we've got from the vet is something different. But like you say if it's started helping within a couple of days then if we haven't noticed anything by tomorrow then we might have to look into maybe the eye drops that you used. Thank you Very much for your help. I'm glad that your guinea pig is better now. Just one more question though do you think she is blind out of the problem eye or is it back to how it was?
Thank you
Laura

the last time she went to the vet they said she had some vision but its hard to tell how much she can really see out of it. She did end up getting a head tilt but the vet does not know why this is happening but i think maybe because she uses her good eye to see everything around her but i was just so thankfull the eye healed
keep us updated I really hope everything works out ok It was a hard time for me when this all happened with my guinea pig:)

and also if you have him together with other piggies you should make sure he is in a cage by himselft because anymore damage to the eye will be less chances of it healing

Oh right ok well I know they don't have great eye sight anyway but id much prefer he could out of both eyes. That you for the help again I will keep you posted. Let's just hope he recovers. He is still eating fine so I know he's not in any pain or discomfort. He live with one other male who is about 5 years old and they get on well and they don't fight or anything so I think he'll be ok for the time being but we will keep a close eye on that too
Thanks
Laura

Hi my guinea had the same problem his eye looked just like that just over a month ago so I rushed him to the vets and they said he is probably going to go blind and if it hadn't healed in a week then we would have to give him an op to take it out. I was so worried for him, it looked so sore. The vet gave him antibiotics and drops and a week later it looked so much better. Now it is fully healed and it just has a slight glaze to it.
