This is known as CHELITIS ("kel-eye-tis") It's a fungal infection common in cavies that appears on the nose, like this: CauseThe cause of Chelitis is unknown and there are many theories as to why it happens, although no theory is difinitive. Generally, it does not appear to be painful or irritating to the cavy, although it looks unpleasant and unattractive. TreatmentChelitis is a scabby stitch - it is not advisable to pick this scab off the nose as the skin underneath is tender and picking off the scabby surface will be painful for the guinea pig. The knobbly scabs drop off on their own, although this does not rid the cavy of the infection. To treat Chelitis, my vet gave me a liquid called "Pevidine" to be applied with a cotton bud to the affected area once a day. For a very scabby stitch, apply around the area to allow the Pevidine to seep under the scab. For a less angry stitch, the Pevidine may be applied on and around it if the scab is not too thick. ConclusionPlease see your vet if you think your cavy has Chelitis. "Pevidine" can be obtained from your veterinary surgeon and, as with all ailments that require a prescription medication, always consult your vet before using prescription treatments.

You can also use Daktarin which is a cream or gel used to treat us humans, you can easily buy this from any good chemist shop.

when we brought home Julius he had a touch of this on his nose. A day or two later it was completely gone. It's been almost 2wks now. So far nothing out of the ordinary as I look him over daily. Is there a precaution I can take so it doesn't reappear? Or is this something you treat when it appears? Also, is this fungus contagious? Because, a week later is when Napoleon's ear got the crusties..
