Angus & Fergus' hair is dramatically falling out - i looked like i had a guinea pig hair t-shirt on after weighing them. There are specks in their hair but no baldy bits. The specks look like hay dust, a browny colour & they're only on their backs/heads. I only saw them on Fergus not Angus tho' both their hair is falling out, just like when you stroke a dog thats moulting. I did lightly tug their hair & it did come out but i couldn't see any skin attached. Does it sound like a fungal infection or could they just be moulting? I emailed Chrissie at GG & she said babies don't moult yet someone else said all guineas moult. Anyone any ideas? And do your guineas, young & old moult?

Well all my lot are moulting terribly at the moment, tons of it every time I stroke them I get a handful so I wouldn't have thought it was a fungal infection with Angus & Fergus although obviously I can't be 100% sure I would say not. Thanks Dawn, i thought it may be that they were moulting but then didn't know if they did or not. That's made me much happier

My pigs don't really shed all that much. Right now they're not shedding at all in fact their fur is getting thicker for winter.

Oh Rachel don't say that you'll have me worrying again LOL The older ones don't seem to be losing much hair it's just the little ones. I did wonder if like dogs they lose their "baby" hair & this could be the reason for it. Yet again i'll be eagle-eyed & watching for anything moving They're in good company for skin problems as i myself have had psoriasis for the past 33 years & have had various lotions/potions slapped on me!!! ;D ;D

Oh thats a nightmare eh?
My brother swears by an Aloe and bee propolis cream, but I think he's grown out of the worst of it now
Rayfays post about her guineas building up coat made me wonder if its possible for your guys to moult if your house is warmer, have you had the heating on lately?

They're outside, in their gazebo, but it is warm in there. I have plastic sheeting on both ends & my "blinds" on the windows & door to prevent them (& me) getting wet & they have woolly blankets over both ends of their hutches incase of draughts & pigloos to cuddle up in so it could be just that, i'll be checking them again today.

Their hair's still dropping but there's no skin attached to it & the bits don't appear to be moving, i've already emailed Chrissie for her view, i'll let you know what the outcome is. I would've bathed them but because they're babies i don't know if i can use the same shampoo on them

Chrissie said the "bits" could be crawling lice so they'll be bathed in lice & easy shampoo cos they're still visible today & their hair is STILL dropping!

Yes definately sounds like running lice Niki Glad you got them treated quickly do you have to repeat it? Dawn Yes Dawn, they were done today but as they're under 12wks the shampoo had only to be left on 2 mins not the usual 5 mins & i repeat it again next wk. (they will be chuffed!) Whatever those bits were they went down the plughole & their hair is looking lovely & shiny. I emailed Wendi at TC with their bath pics, she said she was still treating some of her rescues for lice/fungal infections as it seemed v.resilient. She'd spoken to Chrissie & a rodentologist & both said this has been the worst year ever for lice, mites & fungal infections. I was beating myself up wondering what i was doing so wrong as i've had the hat-trick now LOL Here's to a better year next year Out of interest where do they comefrom? I know hay can carry mites & understand fungal is spores in the air but lice, how do they get lice? I disinfect with Genie pet disinfectant which is supposed to combat these kinda things or am i just unlucky LOL

I use johnsons anti mite spray on mine for static lice and it also works with running lice too as I found not long ago with Hannah's friend Sarah when she bought a piggy at Oldham show and his weas absolutey infected. He was really bad and it took 3 times to get rid of them Dawn
