For the past 2 weeks Wallace has lost 2oz in weight which has caused me some concern, he's going to the vets tomorrow because he's showing no symptoms of anything. No odd breathing, no discharge from eyes or nose, no excess saliva from his mouth. He is eating his veg & drinking & his poops are normal sized. He's not at all lethargic & isn't sitting in a corner "fluffed up" and sad, infact he looks the picture of health just thinner.
I have, for the past 3 weeks been trying (again) to get them off the Wilko food onto something better but they will not eat p@h nuggets, wagg crunch, wagg optimum pellets or tesco muesli.
This last attempt of mine was the wilko food mixed with wagg crunch - a 2:1 ratio & a separate bowl with wagg optimum pellets on their own, the W's bowls, especially, were hardly touched
Oh & i did think it could be worms & wormed him on Sunday. I've syringe fed him a mush of p@H nuggets the past 2 days, he ate this with no probs & he has gained 1oz overnight.
Could his weight-loss be because he's starving himself because i mixed the food & he just doesn't like it or could it be something else? And are there any piggy foods that are irresistable that i can try because i'm wasting everything i buy.
Niki x

Oxbow is pretty irresistable to my girls. Also one that's cheaper is Mazuri. My pigs absolutley loooove Mazuri. The first to go of their pellets is always oxbow and then soon after the Mazuri is gone!

Niki x I really don't think that it could be anything serious if his poops are ok no diarohea and he is eating his veggies and drinking normally I wouldn't worry too much. When I first changed mine over to P@H pellets they wouldn't touch them for ages just picked out the wagg mix and left the pellets but gradually as I ran out of the mix they started to eat the pellets and now they love them. They eat all of it with no waste. It may be down to eating less pellets but really 2oz isn't much. They can gain an ounce just after a meal sometimes as I found when Lily-Belle lost her 6 oz then gained 30g overnight when I started syringe feeding her. She yoyo'd that way everytime I fed her goin up a few grams and back down again next time I weighed her. However I would go to the vet if you are worried just to be on the safe side. Let us know how it goes wont you? Dawn

I wouldn't worry to much Nikki 2oz is not very much at all and as he is showing no signs of anything serious he may just be a fussy eater

Wallace lost a total of 4oz (2oz for 2 wks) & i had a vets app booked for the friday i was going into hosp which i had to cancel as i had to be at the hosp by 2pm as all the docs were in meetings Wallace still hasn't gained his lost 4oz but hasn't lost anymore (or hadn't last week) & is still eating & drinking normal as he's always done. I stopped mixing the pellets & the other foods & have given them their beloved wilko food again-my thinking being any food is better than none. I'll be weighing him today & if he's lost again he'll have to go to the vets as soon as i'm home as it's a complete mystery to me. UPDATE: Weighed him today he's now 2lb 4oz/1029g & on 17th December he was 2lb 14oz/1324g. i still have no idea what's causing his drastic weightloss so he's going to the vet with Snoopy asap as i can't wait until i get home to take him I'll keep you posted Niki x

OMG that IS a big drop this is what happened with Lily-Belle but she had a bout of diarohea. I would get him to a vet. Is he drinking? If not you will have to try sryinge him some liquids as he could get dehydrated. I had Lily-Belle on baytril and I was syringe feeding her Science Recovery every few hours maybe he needs the same.
I really hope he will be ok, keep us up to date on his progress wont you?
Best Wishes, Dawn

How old is Wallace? Age wouldn't have that big an effect of him, but as pigs age they *can* lose a few ounces over time.
As long as he is getting unlimited hay plus his daily veggies, he won't be starving himself. It has to be some other kind of health problem, but I do think a vets opinion is needed more than anything here.
Other brands of dry feed to try are Burgess Supa Guinea Excel, Science Selective Guinea Pig, and Oxbow Cavy Cuisine. Oxbow is more expensive but nutritionally superior to most other brands.
Good luck; I hope your vet gets to the bottom of his weight loss.

The vet was useless, Wallace went on 25th Jan, he said he was fine but his weightloss wasn't normal & to take him back in 4 weeks!!
As you all know i found him dead in his hutch on 28th Jan, with Wilbur looking on. He was 20 months old & had lots of crusting round his eyes which makes me think it was a URI but he'd still been eating & drinking & running around as normal & showed no signs of being ill at all. I did syringe feed him baby food & mushed p&h pellets when i came home on a sunday for a few hours & he ate them with vigour but i knew he wasn't well, i used to say to snoopy "i'm going to come home & find him dead, i know i am." He's now sleeping peacefully in our garden under the laurel tree
Wilbur seems to be doing fine on his own, he never did like other piggies, only himself & Wallace & would attack poor Wallace if he got a whiff of another piggy so he's staying an only boy

Niki, I'm so sorry that you've lost Wallace . I can't believe how useless your vet was. Which side of Leeds do you live at cos there is a really good guinea pig vet in Dewsbury which i use. If you should ever need her(fingers and toes crossed that you won't) message me and I'll give you the details. Jo-anne

This is the vets I use www.caldervets.co.uk/ They are all really good but if you want to see a guinea pig specialist then ask for Meg. You have to have an appointment to guarantee seeing her and she only works at Dewsbury. She has sorted my Tish out when most vets wouldn't have touched her.
