make a piggy off-colour?
Hamish is a rex & has really dense hair. He didn't eat all his veg yesterday but ate grass in the run & today he's hiding away today looking sorry for himself. He had his 2nd dose of Ivomec yesterday too, this wouldn't affect him would it?
He's going to the vets Wednesday (first day the piggy vet's there) because he's also lost 3oz since i weighed him 2 wks ago.
I can't see any visible symptoms of anything just that he isn't quite himself
Any ideas anyone?

I dont know if ivermec could affect it this way sorry. It might be the weather though. It is very warm in our caviary at the moment so I have a fan on. I would definately get him checked by a vet as soon as you can.

It was really hot yesterday Emmsy, he'd been out with the rest of them grazing but spent quite a bit of time in the shade. When i went to put frozen bottles in their hutches he felt quite hot to the touch. Now i think about it I don't think it would affect him Dawn, he wasn't the only one to have it & everyone else was fine. He's been out grazing today & did eat thankfully. Tonight he's seemed more like himself, i've syringe fed him some food/water & he's been tucking into his veggies. I've also opened up one of the sides of my shed to allow plenty more air in as it felt quite warm in there, fans are the next things on my list. Will see if the vet can shed any light on what may be wrong with him. Will keep you posted Niki x He

Hope Hamish stays well. It's very hot and humid where I live. My girls live in the back hall, where there is air conditioning, but they have still been off during the real humid weather. So have I, come to think of it!!!!

Hi Niki...Sorry to hear Hamish hasnt been well ! Could well be the hot weather. We had a very warm day on Saturday, and Dale drank 2 thirds of his bottle of water ! A tip that our vet gave me, for checking temperature, is to touch your piggy's ears against your lips. If the ears are hot, then he/she probably has a temp. I'm glad to hear Hamish was eating last night. Keep giving him veg that's high in water content today, to keep him hydrated eg. cucumbers are great. ( cool as a cucumber..lol...) When Dale was ill some time ago, syringing water into his mouth every hour really helped. Hope the little fella is ok. let us know what your vet has to say. Irene. x

kEEP AND FREEZE ALL THE SMALL PLASTIC BOTTLES, WRAP THEM IN A TOWEL AND LET THEM LIE ON THEM. THEY ALSO LIKE LYING ON WALL TILES WHICH HELP TO KEEP THEM COOL. FANS AND COOLING FANS HELP, BUT THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR GUINEAS IS TO INSTALL AN AIR CONDITIONING UNIT - THEY ARE BRILLIANT, ALL OURS WERE COOL AND COMFORTABLE OVER THE WEEKEND

FANS AND COOLING FANS HELP, BUT THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR GUINEAS IS TO INSTALL AN AIR CONDITIONING UNIT - THEY ARE BRILLIANT, ALL OURS WERE COOL AND COMFORTABLE OVER THE WEEKEND They all have a frozen bottle but not all will lie near them I also have hand-wrung wet towels draped over their hutch fronts. Everyone else is fine, just Hamish who's had me concerned. We've been to the vets & nothing stood out. He was felt all over & all was fine, he shows no outward symptoms of anything yet he's still hiding away thru' the day. He was weighed; 1400g on their scales & she tried to look at his teeth but he had a mouthful of food! She put him on Baytil, 0.5ml a day, gave me some Science Recovery to give him & we go again Monday. He's had 30ml of Recovery food & was tucking into his veg when i checked on him at 10pm. Oh & Irene, thanks so much for the "ear" tip, his ears were cold today Niki x

How is Hamish now Niki? Dawn He's hidden away most of the day but came out for a romaine leaf & i am convinced the heat isn't helping because as soon as i draped the towels onto the front of the hutches he came out & started eating. He loves the syringe so much so that he bites the nozzle as if to say "more, i want more" ;D Esme's giving me more cause for concern For approx 3 days she'd been taking herself away from Ester & Bijou & staying in her pigloo even when i put veg in which is unheard of. Esme is the top sow & eats first, is first at the bars, is first at everything. She's been to the vets today, she weighed 1kg exactly which means she's lost 2oz since Sunday (going by my scales). Her stomach was empty & her chest sounded "muffly," the vet said "she has a bug" whatever that means so she too is on 0.5ml Baytril & Recovery food which she hates tho' today she has eaten more veg. I just see history repeating itself & i am worried. I'm also syringe-feeding Looby because of her teeth tho' thankfully she is eating by herself & loves the Recovery food as much as Hamish. Then tonight Dylan had another fit I have wondered if today was the 13th, tomorrow's got to be better or i'll be white haired or bald by the end of the week Niki x

Glad they seem to be improving Niki. The forecast is for it to get a little more unsettled and cooler so hopefully that will help
