I have noticed another small pile of blood in Chip's cage today. He seems fine in himself - eating, drinking and chatting.
My worry is that he is eating alot or the correx around the cage and I wonder if this is causing some internal damage. I still have baytril left from is last episode which the vet thought was a UTI.
Does anyone else's piggies eat the correx?

I have just been out and bought Alfa Alfa hard nibbles and those bird seed looking things to hang from the cage, to try and give him something else to chomp on. Although his run & cage are filled with toys of all discriptions - chewy things etc. I couldn't see any patches of blood this morning and he still seems fine eating and chatting well. I was thinking maybe I should change the correx to lino Karen

Hi Karen Yes Ive noticed my 3 big boars have started nibbling the correx, no bleeding or signs of any effect but I was concerned also and thinking of changing to lino. Ive been giving them tons of tim hay to nibble on and big sweetcorn cobs but they still prefer the correx. Elaine

Chips has another appointment at the vets this afternoon.
I am not sure whether it is the correx which is giving him the intermittent bleeding but I put him back on baytril last night! Just in case it is sludge, gall stones or UTI but he seems so happy and eating well etc - just doesn't seem poorly.

Chips has been back to the vets and she wasn't particularly helpful. She still thinks it MIGHT be a UTI but isn't sure - great! She said she would like to do an xray and then he may need operating. She wanted £95.00 for xray and the nurse couldn't give me a price for the op as it is charged at a 1/2 hourly rate . Seeing they aren't sure I am going along with the baytril and some painkiller just incase he is in pain . I am not sure I want to put him through that at the moment as he seems fine in himself - so will see how he gets on with his meds! She did say that it MIGHT be the correx but thought that would affect his poops. The joys of owning animals - I just wish they could speak!! Karen

Sorry you're vet didn't sound too helpfull Karen, I hope the meds he's on does the trick. I don't use correx in my cages, purely because my hubbys a carpet fitter, so has lots of spare offcuts of lino etc. ;D What I do is use a 3.2mm ply wood (which you can cut by scoring) and then I stick the lino onto this using double sided sticky tape. This works really well for my piggies and touch wood, they don't chew any of it! Ange

My piggies occassionally chew the correx too, I think it is just a piggy thing chew everything in site. I have had no ill effects so far so I think it is probably something else but I would try the baytril first before having an operation seems pretty drastic just for a UTI

I think the vet is concerned it might be stones - sludge that's why she wants to do the xray - but is treating the easier option of a UTI. We all know our own kids and animals and I just don't feel that he is poorly. Saying that he is a boar of approx 4 years and 4 months!! Karen

£95.00 wow thats a lot !! Unfortunately I live in a very expensive area and the vets just take advantage Not all of us own £2.5m homes!! It's not just vets, window cleaners, chimney sweeps as soon as they see you have a Beaconsfield post code up goes the price Thanks for the tape idea - to be honest I think he may just chew that too - perhaps I should put mustard on it. If they are chewing the correx you could put some stuff that doesn't taste nice around where they chew like when people want to stop biting their nails you can buy stuff to put on your nails so when you go to chew it its revolting.

Well I can vouch for vets being expensive. It cost me just over £235 for Beth's treatment. She had an xray and ultrasound then an op to remove the stones. I nearly died when they said it would be that much but what can you do? I couldn't let her suffer so I had no choice but to pay it.

Dawn - What were Beths symptons for her stones, becuase Chips had 3 small patches of blood the first time ( a couple of weeks back) and I have only noticed one small patch this time. He seems absolutely fine otherwise!
I really don't want to be paying for unnecessary vet bills (as my OH business isn't good at the moment and we are living on a third of his normal wage) and put Chips through undue stress.
If it turns out he is poorly of course we will sort him out.

It started off not too bad but after a week or so on baytril instead of getting better it got worse and I could see her straining to pee as if it hurt her. She didn't wheek or anything but I could see she was in pain peeing. I don't think Chips has the same thing, maybe it's just a bad dose of cystitis and baytril will clear it up but just note you need 0.7ml of baytril per day for at least 7 days. I was prescribed 0.4ml for 5 days which is not enough to clear it up successfully and I had to have repeated dose. Dawn

Thanks Dawn
He has been prescribed 0.4 ml twice aday is this enough or do you think I should put it to 0.7 ml twice aday. I was told also to fill the syringe up with fruit juice at the same time which takes it upto 1ml
