Can anyone tell me what may be wrong with Farley?
He has a slight bladder infection from time to time, but he is happy in himself, and eating so well that he is quite obese now
I restrict his higher sugar veg etc and he is on science selective thats low calorie , and he has umlimited hay
He doesnt seem to want his hammock anymore, but he is energetic when he comes out
Do you think he needs worming? He hasnt had any for a long time, but I thought that a worm burden made guineas lose weight?

I think piggies get bloated when they need worming. I would do it anyway just to be on the safe side. it can't hurt can it?

Blimey what a porker lol! Who weighs that?
Farley is 1kg 29g
His waist measurement is 14 inches around the middle.....and he's a peruvian, they tend to be a bit longer and sausage shaped dont they? He is definately a hamburger around the middle
Can you recommend a wormer? I have heard of Panacur, for horses, but I only need a little, and the tube is £17, ost would be wasted

Ah, bless them! I guess compared to Timba who is more athletic....
You wont believe I went to the vet and they didnt sell wormer! What have you got to do at Pets@Home to get a bit of knowledge, ah well
How do you buy the ivermectin? Is in on line?

My vet said it isn't necessary to worm my piggies and they don't sell it either. I must admit I don't show them and mine I are just pet piggies. I have had piggies for the last 8 years and I have never wormed them, am I meant to?

Well they must be okay after 8 years!
I'm not really sure Karen, some people recommend it, and I think Farley is showing signs of needing it.
I do feed them grass from all over, maybe thats how he may have picked them up
I give spot on occiasionally which helps with internal red worms but there are other worms that can infest too, and if there are too many then that can get a bit out of hand I guess
I'm happy to try it and see if it helps him
Its a bit of a sweeoing statement for a vet to say they dont ever need worming though isnt it ?
I distrust doctors who make the same easy assumptions.....lol!

I have never wormed my piggies before and Vinnie is 6 now, and i have never wormed him before. I wouldn't know where to buy wormers that are sfae for piggies to be honest, becasue nothing is licensed. If a vet was to perscribe a wormer they would have to get you to sign a discliamer by law anyway, so you are aware of the risks of using unlicenced drugs.
I work as a vet nurse and both vets and qualified nurses have said it is rare and they don't need worming regular like dogs and cats. If piggies do show signs, that is when it needs treating and only then.
Your vet could do a feacel egg count to see if Farley does have worms, that way you know for diffinate and then they should be able to prescibe the right wormer for you if he does have them.

Oo thanks Kim, I will try this cos Niki has been kind enough to offer me some of her ivemectin, with a dosage guide, and i've got a tiny syringe so I cat it accurate
If there isnt an improvement I will definately take him
Guess I could do with reading up a bit more about worm infestation too

GASTROINTESTINAL WORMS
Just like dogs and cats, guinea pigs can also become infected with worms. If left untreated they may hinder the guinea pig’s growth and development while posing a risk of infection to other pets and humans. Gastrointestinal worms can easily be treated with liquid medications developed for small animals. As a precaution they should administered every three months.
If your guinea pig looks unwell it should be taken to your vet.
Worms Seen as white streaks in their droppings usually comes from grazing on grass. This is a case for the vet however.
Types of Parasites: tapeworms, roundworms, pinworms Symptoms: diarrhea, anemia, weight loss, worms or worm-like parasites in your guinea pig's feces What to do: take your guinea pig to a veterinarian. Note: parasites like these are found more in guinea pigs that are kept outdoors than those that are kept indoors.
You said that Farley is putting weight on. One of the signs of worms is weight loss, so i don't think you should be worrying about worms if he has put weight on.

Thanks for that Kim.
Mine don't regularly graze on grass but I do feed them handfuls of long grass where I know dogs and cats haven't been. Looks like I have just been lucky.

Thats very helpful Kim, thanks, I made sense that they may have picked some up , Niki kindly gave me some ivermectin before I saw this post, so I have treated Farley with that and the slightly rounded bloaty feeling has gone, he's nice and neat again, and probably feeling much better too
I will keep a watch out for this again, and perhaps treat fairly reguarly so it doesnt get bad
Thanks again Niki, for the ivermectin, it definately seems to have done the trick, phew
