Hello Everyone,
I was contacted by a rescue group who has a 3 month old boar for adoption. The problem is that he was previously kept in a cage that had a metal grate on the bottom. Unfortunately the poor little guy must have gotten his foot stuck because now he has a broken foot. They said that they have tried to splint it but he keeps chewing it off. Is there anything else that can be done for him ? I haven't seen him in person because of the long drive involved. They told me that he doesn't act like he's in any pain. I could provide a good. loving home for him, but I'm concerned for his overall health & happiness. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hi lexie guinea pigs dont show they are in pain . I honestly dont know what to advise you to do because you might take on this piggy and he could need treatment at the vets for a while with this problem . I would think they could get it to heal if the splint could be left on because he is till young . Are they going to pay vets bills or is that up to you when you become his owner ? I know you are willing to give him a good home but you need to be prepared for a high vet bill for surgery if in the future he might need it . Have a good think about it and ask them lots of questions before taking him on . good luck whatever you decide to do x

Thank you for replying Celia. I did speak with them again last night & am concerned for the lack of medical treatment the pig has received. They had it wrapped up in a splint, but the pig chewed it off. They also said that it has a sore; probably from the splint. The bone is not protruding. They taped it up a different way. The little guy drags his foot when he walks. I know how tight money is these days & I appreciate everything they are doing for him. If they permit me, I might drive up there this weekend to check him out for myself. They claim the vet instructed them how to tape his leg & also administer an antibiotic. I would take him in a heartbeat, but I'm also dealing with a pig that has an abscess that won't heal. It just seems the last few pigs I have adopted have had serious medical issues. I'm concerned that if I don't adopt him, they might put him down. They only want him to go to a home with previous pig experience, so I'm not sure how many other people they have contacted. Thanks again. I'll keep you updated.

Poor little guy. Do they make those lamp shade collars for piggies like they do to keep dogs from scratching after surgery? That would keep him from chewing off the splint but it may be really stressful for him.....

Hi Everyone,
Just an update on the little guy. He was examined by a vet today. There is some calcification around the break, which they said is good. He does have an infection in that same leg & will be giving antibiotics for it. The vet thinks that without surgery he probably will drag the foot when he walks, but he should be given a chance to live. They said I could see him on Saturday if I'm still interested in adopting him. Sadly, I'm the only person that has expressed an interest in him.

No, I didn't get him. They called me & asked me to postpone my trip down to see him because they had a family matter to attend to. They did tell me that the sore on his leg is still oozing pus. They flush it daily with peroxide & are giving him antibiotics. They said it's tricky to treat the sore because it's very close to where his foot is broken. The vet advised them to only flush out the site & not to try & squeeze the pus out. I believe that they will let me adopt him. I was very disappointed but fully understand when family problems crop up. They said he's quite lively & doesn't seem to be in any distress. I will definitely post when I get more news. Thanks so much for asking.

Good news everyone -- the baby with the broken foot is home with me now & doing quite well. I took him to be checked by my vet & the infection is gone & his foot is completely healed. He does drag it slightly, but it certainly doesn't interfere with his appetite. Thanks to everyone who was concerned about him.
