Maybe this is a stupid question, but it's better safe than sorry!
I'm off work today because I've a really bad throat and ear infection. If I play with the pigsters, could I make them sick? Or should I just stay clear just in case?

Ive heard lots of different things about this, but I think it is OK for you play with them. As it is an infection it will be contained, but I guess if it is a virus it may be different?? But dont quote me on that! I think it is OK to be with your animals though. Any other comments on this would be good

Hi, i'm off work for the 2nd week in a row with the same thing- boring isn't it! I decided better safe than sorry and have stopped picking up/cuddling my guineas while i'm ill. I'm still interacting with them but if i pick them up i know i won't be able to resist kissing them and i don't think that's a good idea, for them to be near my mouth. So i say play with them but don't let them near your face. Hope you feel better soon!

This is a hard one, and I'm not entirely sure.... As far as I know, human viruses etc are different to the ones cavies pick up. My vet has even said that these viruses differ from rodent to rodent ie.what affects a gerbil, may not make a cavy ill, but don't quote me on this ! As a human nurse, though, I do know that cold/flu viruses are easily passed from one person to another. You don'thave to touch another person, the virus will be airborne anyway, even if you are in the same room as another person. Thats why usually everyone in an office will get a cold, even if there is no physical interaction between all the people there. Chances are your piggies have been in contact with your infection anyway, just by you touchong them etc, but to be on the safe side, it might be best not to cuddle and kiss them too much, until you are well on the mend ! So annoying isn't it ? Hope you are better soon. Irene.xx

Yeah, I think I'll just leave them be until I'm better. I've settled for giving them some scratches under their chins and behind their ears but I'm leaving them in their cages. Hilda especially likes to sit under my chin so that's probably not the best place for her. Plus, if she sits there I won't be able to resist kissing her!
Yeah, I got my infection from one of the girls at work who got it from her boyfriend who works in a creche where there was a sore throat going around. So many people along the line of infection!
