I am hoping that a few of you or more on here will be able to tell me more about what is going on with one of my newest rescues eyes. The previous owner said that the vet she took him to said there was nothing really wrong and that it wasn't pea eye. Gave her some drops but told her to only use them if he started to scratch at it. It doesn't seem to bother him at all but it also seems as if he does not see as well either. If I am not speaking while coming close to his cage and then I say something next to him or try to pet him without saying something the poor little dear nearly jumps out of his skin! Here are the pics of his eye...please let me know what you think!

It does look like fatty eye but the more experienced person will advise. As from what I remember and read, with fatty eye, there is no treatment for it successfully though you could have it surgically removed. I could be wrong so will see if anyone else can correct me Sasha

It looks infected to me I would use the drops the vet gave you. What are the drops he gave you called? I use chloramphenicol drops that you can get from your chemist for use when humans have conjunctivitis.

Sadly, I have no idea what the drops were as the previous owner didn't bother to bring them with her when she dropped them off to me. She did say that he has been like this since she has had him and made the statement that he was born like that. So I am not sure. I do have some drops that we have for when one of our children had conjunctivitis so I should use those and see what happens?

I would try them just to see if they work if it's no different after 5 days I would say it might not be that but its worth trying cant hurt.

my guineapig snowdrop had a really bad eye it was cloudy and had a creamy coloured spot in the corner, I went to the chemist and got some brolene eye ointment cream, 5 days later her eye is clear ,she just has a tiny pin prick dot, so you could try that.

I have a peru boar here at the moment who has fatty eye and it looks exactly like that . I will try to get some pics of his eye to show you . The eye looks a little cloudy on your pig so some optrex infected eye drops wouldn't do any harm but you might find he has fatty eye and the begining of cataracts x Oh sorry just noticed you are from the USA i dont know if you get optrex over there ?

Celia, Do you get the optrex from the chemist?? As it is my father -in-law is actually coming over here in a little over a week (from Manchester) and I could see if my mother-in-law could send some w/him. Is there any other meds that might be helpful for me in the rescue that would be good to have on hand that I should see if he can bring w/him? Thanks so much for all the wonderful advice!

I am not sure specifically what I need at this point. I was just trying to get prepared for anything to have some things on hand since now I have 30 piggies. My in-laws are going to send over the other 2 meds for his eyes so that I can try those. Thanks for all the help!

I have the other eye drops that were prescribed for my children that we are using right now...the other meds should be here on Saturday! I also spoke with a vet that is going to get me a specific eye cream followed with some antibiotics as she said it looks like clamydia (sorry not sure on the spelling) and if it is not treated with the antibiotics he will certainly go blind...we don't want that!

***UPDATE*** We have been using eye drops on Schwa and he is also on an oral antibiotic which seem to be doing good. The cloudiness is not as prominent as before. The vet said that the bumps will likely not completely go away but they should go down in size as part is fatty deposits but he also had some infection in there. He is doing much better and has started running around more. He is actually an active piggy! ;D I would have never guessed that as this is the first we have seen him up and running around. What a great sight! Thanks for all the help!

My piggy Spike had fatty eye and it looked very similar to this. It is not life threatening but can restrict the piggys sight if not removed- this is not a big op and would not require an aneasthetic. My Spike had his removed with no problems after whatsoever. Hope you get it sorted
