My piggie has been dianosed with an URI a week ago. She has another two weeks of treatment left on Baytril and I am finding it increasingly difficult to give her the medicine orally by syringe as shes putting up a fair fight. Is there anything I can do to make it easier to give it to her? It must be stressing her out me keep trying to force her to take it! I have tried using a little bit of apple juice - that worked once till she realised I tricked her and didnt work again. If I put some on lettuce she leaves it but she will eat it off cucumber... (I only wonder how long for!)
Is there anything else I can do? x

Unfortunatly there isnt much alse u can do and baytril does taste yuk.
My Lemon was on baytril for quite some time and she used to get used to knowing when it was coming so she put quite a fight in too, all you can do really is persever.
With my Lemon being on so much medication at the time we used to use a nebuliser to administer her medication but this is quite costly for only a short period of time. Lemon was on long term medication, so using a nebuliser cuts out the stress.

Its a case of being cruel to be kind she needs the meds or the uri could kill her . I have tried putting some ribena in with the baytril and i wrap them in a towel if needed .Try putting the syringe in from the side not the front of the mouth p.s you can put vick or olbas oil on her nose too

Yeah I was going to say the sameas Sasha, wrap her up in a towel this way she wont be able to move about as much. Good luck A feisty pig is a good sign that she must be feeling a bit better anyway.

It should be ok to put on to cucumber , why dont you try giving her the cucumber after the syringe of baytril as a treat ? then she learns to take the meds and get a treat afterwards x

Hi again everyone. I hope you dont mind me just continuing this thread rather than creating a new one. Betty has been on Baytril for a little over 3 weeks now and she is still sneezing and still has discharge from her nose. How long do URI's last when treated? I am getting worried. She is due to go back to the vets this week for yet another check up. Shes still eating (loads) and drinking (loads), runs laps around her cage and popcorns all over the place and loves to be cuddled. Just a little worried shes going to be sick for a long time as we have another pig in quarantine waiting to meet her! x

Back to the vets again today... she said there was no sign the infection was still there and the fact she is sneezing and has a snotty nose is probably because she had an infection for a long time and her nasal passages are still inflamed. Do you think the vet is right? I dont think she was too cavy savy

What kind of bedding is she on? It could be that she may be allergic to her own bedding. Try changing it to a different brand and see how she gets on with that. If it was up to me, I'd stop the baytril now as its not seemingly to be making any difference to her blocked nose and the more she is on Baytril, the more damage to her gut unless you been giving her probiotics to counteract it.
A fiesty pig is always a good sign and she seems to have a good appetite and drinking well so I wouldn't be soo overly worried but check out her bedding to see if there's an improvement or not.

I have stopped the baytril now on the advice of the vet. . She was on woodshavings so when I cleaned her out on Sunday I had the same thought about the alergies and I switched her to just plain newspaper but it hasnt made a difference, in fact shes just eating it! booooo dont know what to do with the little thing but at least shes stopped sneezing now. Bad news though other pig has gotten sick now with her eyes all gunked up so back to the vets again tomorrow. Not having much luck with the piggies!

My gp Betty was dianosed with a URI over a month ago. For 3 weeks she was on baytril everyday. Since Monday I was told to stop giving it to her but shes still ill so shes going back to the vets tomorrow. Is this normal? I am really worried that shes still ill. To top it off my other pig who lives in a different cage away from Betty also now has a URI and conjunctivitous. I really dont know what else I can do. I have tried covering their cages round to keep out drafts, not using wood shavings, changing the hay to oxbow western timothy, givin them probiotics. I am running out of ideas. Any suggestions? I just really want to get them both healthy so they can live together

you would be more likely to get help if you posted your own new thread, as often people who have already read this one dont come back on it, i would see what your vet says when you take your piggy back.

since you have tried baytril you could try sudafed human cough medicine and olbas oil or vicks on their noses but let us know what your vet says first before trying these . I have used this in the past and the UTI never came back , but my pig never had a snotty nose just a ruttle .
