My poor baby boy tore his claw tonight!! it was at about 7.30 this evening when I noticed it - he wasn't walking strangely or making any strange noises, it was only when i noticed the blood on his fleece that i had a look at him. he tore his claw AND the quick off. The vet cut it off and bathed it and then gave him some baytril and an analgesic. he's eating hay at the moment and seems to be moving about ok if a bit quiet.
it cost me £85! but i'm glad that i took him. it wasn't that far.
Has anyone else has any experiences of torn claw + quick? x

No I have had no experience of torned claws and quick.
Noting that you mentioned Baytril - have you given your piggy Probiotics as well?
You can give him as much Dantone Actimel etc after the baytril as the baytril destroys the gut flora and making the piggies ill.

Oh poor little piggy, wow £85 seems a little steep for the vet to charge. If this happens again I would just put some sudocrem cream or tea tree cream on. All you need to do is make sure it is kept clean and all should be well you dont realy need baytril unless it gets infected.

ok dawn i will do. I'd just never heard of it before and I was so worried about him! It was that much becasue it was the out of hours service that I used. that's £71.31 before treatment! he seemed ok this morning, eating and drinking and running around so he seems to be ok. i'll bathe it tonight just to losen some of the dirt and maybe put some tea tree cream on it (lol becasue i have some of that!) THanks x

One of my girls did exactly the same last week, she was running around the kitchen and I think her claw went down a gap in the flooring and tore it. She sat there shaking her foot, just like we'd shake our hand if we'd hurt it...it did bleed quite a lot but we bathed it and put Sudocreme on and it's fine now..thankfully. I just cannot understand how these vets can justify the amounts they charge , to charge an out of hours fee of £70 + for a treatment that cost less than a fifth of that is disgusting. It's really not surprising that some people just don't go to the vets with their animals unless absolutely necessary..they can't afford it!

I know. I was shocked but I was so worried that I didn't want to risk it! the problem is that I can't see HOW he did it! Is your baby ok? did she tear the quick too?
It's nice to know about the cream though, I will just do that in future because even though I have a fund for treatment, I can't REALLY afford any more trips that cost that much...

Yes, Molly is fine now thanks...she really is the clumsy one in my gang, if anybody is going to hurt themselves, catch something..it'll be Molly, lol. She did tear the quick yes and it looked painful from the way she was shaking it too...but as soon as we cleaned it and put the Sudocreme on it seemed to ease it and she was ok . Is your little chap ok now?

I did this to one of my pigs many years ago , it was when i got the piggy shed up and running and the pigs weren't used to the new door poor spikey got her nail stuck under the door and it ripped her claw out . I will never forget how i felt because there was so much blood i thought i had cut her foot off ! I rushed her to the vets we were covered in blood and it turned out to be her claw , the price was about £8 in total and she got meds
