Hi everyone - I hope that I amnot worrying unnecessarily, but am just wondering.... As you all know, my lovely boar, Charlie, is very dear to me. He turned 4yrs on Saturday ( 14th Feb ). Well, its just that he's been unusually quiet the past few days... He's drinking well, eating all the veg he usually loves and that I give him, but is eating very little of his grains and hay.... less poops in his cage, although what he's doing are all normal looking. His urine appears normal too, and the usual amount of wet spots every day in his cage. Its just that he seems to be sleeping more too. Not wheeking when the other 2 boys come out to scream for food, although he gobbles up any treats I give him ! On examination, he doesn't seem to be in any distress - no tummy distension or discomfort. His eyes are bright. Fur shiny and soft as usual. No fever that I am aware of. But where he would "talk" a lot to me during cuddle-time, he's just looking into my eyes, and snuggling up under my chin. Rolls himself into a little comfy ball and goes to sleep in my lap. He seems happy doing this, but he's usually more chatty. Is this maybe just "old-age" creeping up ?? or am I a neurotic piggy mummy ? I don't want to be missing anything, that may be significant though. Any comments on older piggies willbe much appreciated ! ;D Irene. xx

Hi Irene, unfortunately i dont have any experience with the older piggy as mine are only a year old but do you think maybe you should bring him to Eamonn for a little check up to make sure everything is okay? It might take the weight off your shoulders as i know you have a lot to be dealing with at the mo. Do you think it could be anything to do his illness last year? Hopefully he is okay... its a good sign that he is eating veg and drinking but like you i would be a bit concerned about him not eating much hay and there not being as many poops. We all know how much they love their hay Lola sends whiskery kisses and big hugs to her boyfriend Charlie xoxo

I agree with Luna.....it might be worth going for a check up just to be on the safe side. I've got and have had older piggies and I think just like humans they do quieten down as they get older (although my Purdy seems to be an exception as she's almost 7 and still acts like a youngster at times!) but I'm not sure if it would happen suddenly.

Lovely to hear that your piggy, Purdy is almost 7, Amy ! Really hope my Charlie will be with me for a few more years. I love him so dearly. Nicola - Charlie is sparkling after hearing that his girlfriend sends him kisses ! But seriously, I'mwatching himclosely, and may wellgive Eamonn a ring. Have had Charlie out this morning, andhe seems a bit perkier, but still....

I'd definitely bring him. If he's okay (and I'm sure he is), you'll feel so much better and your mind will be at ease. And if he's got any little problems then you'll have picked up on them good and early

You might want to give him some metacam or metatone to give him a boost to interest his hay.
Might even been that he was having an off day as well all get them sometimes.

Hi Irene, I had a simialr occurence with Parsley (now sadly gone) it was a year before he died though so no connection. It's similar because he was 4 and was acting the same way. I knew he wasn't right even though there were no signs of an emergency. I wondered if he was just feeling his age all of a sudden but was advised this was unlikely to happen overnight. In the end he seemed a little off for maybe 2-3 days and then perked up again and was back to his old self. I wonder now if he was just feeling a little run down or a bit off, much in the same way as we do sometimes! I hope he's back chatting to you soon enough. One thing that reassured me is that when there's something seriously wrong piggies tend to go downhill very quickly so that's how i knew he was ok really. Best wishes

It's all too easy to love these beautiful little creatures. And I know how you feel about Charlie, I love my piggies with all my heart.

Hi everyone - thanks for all your kind messages 1
Abby - I read your reply with great interest. What happened with your Parsley, seems exactly the same with Charlie. Today he's been his old self, eating hay, and pooping his usual "poop mountains"...LOL..... he;s also been popcorning and chatting again, so maybe he was just having a few off days. I know only too well, how quickly piggies can go down, that's why I felt so panicky.... Thanks for putting up with me ! ( panicky piggy-mum !) Charlie sends you all kisses.....xxxxxxx

I'm glad that Charlie is doing better. It's only natural for us to panic when they act out of character. I always worry at the slightest little thing!
