I have one of our new rescue piggies has just started peeing blood. Is this likely a urinary tract infection? I have an oral antibiotic that I can give him, should I? What are some other suggestions? He doesn't really wheek or anything when he wees but it is nothing but blood! I have message at vets for tomorrow morning but wondered what I could do here for him now!

Thank you both for the great links! That was definately helpful...of course when I scanned through the various posts last night I was totally upset over my little babe peeing blood that I was not looking very closely. If I would have looked a bit more I would have found the info! I will try both today and see how he goes...litte thing still wants to sit with me and lick my fingers!

Hello All! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back on this...but it took longer than I thought for him to recoup! However, I am very pleased to say that Gizmo has fully recovered and is now doing very well according to the vet he is fine! We gave him quite a bit of cranberry juice over a weeks period and he actually drank it! He is no longer peeing the blood which was a welcomed sight and he is now back to acting like his sweet, loveable self licking my fingers again! Thank you to all of you for the excellent advice and all your concerns...you certainly made it much easier for me to deal with! xxxooo Gizmo & Robin *hugs*

I'm in the same boat as you were Robin......last night I noticed my Ruby was squeaking while she was urinating and I saw there was blood in it. Luckily, we had to take Ruby to the rodentologist today anyway as she need her teeth trimming every fortnight and she thinks she has a urinary infection so she's keeping her with her so she can do a urinary test and if it is an infection she'll put her on antibiotics. Obviously, I'm worried sick about Ruby but I know she's in good hands.

We had an update on Ruby today and it looks like she may have a bladder stone.....she's still squeaking and passing blood. The rodentologist has suggested we take her to the CCT for an x-ray so we'll have to organise a trip down there after we pick Ruby up....she can come home on Thursday. I just hope everything will be ok...I do worry!

Thanks celia and Dawn. We took her to the CCT on Friday and she had an x-ray and luckily there was no sign of a stone. Vedra thinks she has inflammation of the bladder and I was told to give her anti-inflammatory medication. I've started making barley water for her and it seems to be helping as I've not noticed her squeaking or bleeding since. But just as we have improvement with Ruby I now have problems with Jack.....he's biting his hair off around his legs and belly but there is no sign of anything wrong with his skin and he seems to be in pain as he won't let me touch those areas. He's pretty miserable and reluctant to move around. We're going to get an appointment at the vets for tomorrow if we can as they have a skin specialist there. He had this problem last year and no-one could find anything wrong with him so I just hope the specialist can.

Oh Amy, you are just having a time of it aren't you? I am glad to hear that Ruby is getting better! I hope that you can sort out what is bothering Jack though. If it's not one thing it is another...always seems to happen that way. Keep us posted on how things go...good luck!

Thanks celia and Robin. It always seems to be that way for me.....you try and get on top of one problem and then something else happens! We're going to phone the vets in a mo for an appointment and hopefully the specialist will be there today.

We've just got back from the vets and while we didn't get to see the specialist we did see the head vet. He thinks Jack has some sort of dermatitis and gave him a steroid injection so hopefully he'll start to improve soon.
Ruby was examined and she didn't squeak this time when she had her bladder felt. She did wee on the examination table so the vet was able to test the urine and there's not much protein in it. He said it was best not to give her drugs for it if we could help it and told me to carry on giving her barley water (I've been giving her that for the past few days) and to give her cranberry juice. If I'm still worried about her in 10 days time we can take her back.
I do feel relieved now and just hope that both of them get better soon.

Oh Amy that is wonderful! I am so happy that Ruby is getting better. Hopefully, she will be back to her old self in a few days! Poor Jack, must have been very uncomfortable for him. I hope the shot works and he feels better very soon...you all need some good news! Let us know how he does...take care!

Thanks Robin! Ruby already seems a lot better and she's not as miserable as she was a few days ago. Hopefully, she'll be alright now. Jack did squeal when he had the jab, poor lad, but I gave him a big cuddle afterwards. I'll keep you updated on their progress.

Time for a little update:
Ruby is still doing well and has gained some weight! I'm really pleased with her progress so far. Jack, on the other hand, is still pretty quiet and he has lost some weight so I'm putting him back on syringe feeds to try and stabilise him as he's lost weight two weigh-ins in a row and I don't want him to lose more if I can help it. He's lost 1 1/2 ounces in 10 days. His skin is still very sore even though there is no sign on anything being wrong, other than the fact that he's barbered himself.
